The Best Baby is Sometimes a Dog - Boulder. Colorado Photographer

The best baby photography I do sometimes is of dogs. I am NOT a pet photographer. In no way, whatsoever. I have occasionally done photography of animals when in a family shoot in Boulder…because Boulder is a very doggie loving kind of town, but I do not have the skill of it. I know how to soothe a fussy newborn and make a 6 month baby laugh, but I have no idea how to get a dog to sit still and laugh at me. So here is my best try. That first photo cracks me up. And the tongues! Kudos to those pet photographers that know how to deal with tongues and slobber and restlessness. I’ll photograph a baby any day, but a dog and no baby? I reserve that special favor for friends:)

So these photos were taken for my beautiful, wonderful, amazing, lovely friend Susie. She has been a constant in my life. She has so much joy and gratitude in her heart, it is contageious, and I am always so happy to see her again.

I went to visit with her in Tennesse while I was there for Thanksgiving. I wanted to give her a few pictures of her baby (Morgan) and her second baby (Maddie). And then I took a few of her and her husband, too.

They are the sweetest couple. They just really love each other.  They have the best story, too.

They were high school sweethearts and ended up going their own ways after school ended. Each got married to other people. Each had their own babies and careers and lives. Each got divorced… And then about 15 years ago, they met again, and they knew right away that it was just right. They are perfect complements to each other. Susie is an amazing artist and their home is filled with such light and color and creativity. Ric is more rugged and outdoorsy and drives them around on their boat and was working on the garage he just built when I pulled up the day I took photos.

I can’t think of a happier couple I know. I need too see these kinds of relationships more. Happy ones. When Adam and I are going through all the hard times that inevitably come up with busy lives and children and work and all our big, elaborate dreams, it is nice to be able to look at the couples we know that have really solid, enduring relationships and know that it can be done. And it can be done well.
